Already well-established in this complication by the 1950s, Breitling introduced the SuperOcean line in 1957, intending it to be used both as a recreational dive watch and as a regatta timer. In 1969, Breitling--along with Buren, Leonidas, and Heuer--raced to develop the first automatic chronograph movement. The result--the famed caliber 11 movement--is what beats inside this watch, the Chrono-Matic SuperOcean. Due to the winding system of the movement, the crown had to be relocated to the nine o'clock position, leaving the chronograph pushers at two o'clock and four o'clock.

That alone is what sets this watch apart and makes it highly collectible. Featuring a slide rule chronograph and the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) logo, the model was called the “Navitimer”.

In 1959, Scott Carpenter was selected to be one of the original seven Mercury Astronauts. During his time as a US Navy pilot, Carpenter wore a Breitling Navitimer, and after being selected for the space mission, contacted Breitling to ask for a 24-hour version of the Navitimer. The first version of the 24-hour Navitimer was introduced in 1961, and given the same 806 reference number and featured the AOPA logo on the dial. In July of 1961, Breitling registered the name “Cosmonaute” and began producing the 24-hour Navitimer as the reference 809, however the name “Cosmonaute” was not always used on the dial.

In February of 1962, Carpenter served as backup for John Glenn during preparation for America’s first manned space flight. Carpenter flew on the second American manned space flight a few months later, in May of 1962, having received his 24-hour Navitimer Cosmonaute a few days prior to taking off. Breitling used Carpenter’s successful space flight in their advertisements of the Cosmonaute, showing the same black dial/black subsidiary dials combination that Carpenter wore.

By the end of 1962, the reference 809 Cosmonaute was produced with a number of different dial signatures – some with “Cosmonaute”, some with “Navitimer”, some with the Breitling “B” logo and some with the AOPA logo. Between the end of 1962 and into 1963, Breitling began to update the dial, using silvered subdials to contrast with the black dial, and slimmer hands. By 1964, Breitling replaced the bezel, using a coin-edge instead of the “beads of rice”.

The present watch is an excellent example of an early reference 809, with a beautifully aged dial and desirable beads of rice bezel. The outer slide rule has developed a light golden patina, which contrasts nicely against the black dial, silvered subdials, and golden AOPA logo. Reference 809 Cosmonautes with the beads of rice bezel are highly sought after, having only been produced for less than two years. While the model was produced at the time for the specific purpose of being taken into space, its place in history and timeless design make it wearable today at any occasion.

An early Breitling Navitimer with AOPA logo

Reference: 806

Circa: 1961

Movement: Venus Cal. 178 manual-wind movement

Case: Stainless steel 42mm with beads of rice bezel; snap-on case back; push-down crown; and chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock

Dial: Black dial with luminous Arabic numerals and hands; inner double time scale for Miles Per Hour and Kilometers Per Hour; outer revolving slide rule on silvered chapter ring; subsidiary dials at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock for 12 hour, 30 minute, and constant seconds

Comes with original instructions and Federal Aviation Agency medical certificate of original owner

More about Breitling:

In the early 1950’s, Breitling released their first pilot’s watch, the ref. 806. The Datora models of the 1940’s were among the most elegant complicated wristwatches being produced at the time - available as a triple date chronograph or chronograph with moon phase, often oversized (for that time), and blended the line between sport and dress.

Starting in the 1960’s, Breitling began releasing a number of new chronograph models and expanding on the range of current models with a variety of dial designs. At this time, the Datora line took on a more sporty look and feel with large steel cases and more striking and playful dial colors, including two subdials in an elliptic black "surfboard" background . Some references were the typical circular case shape, while others were the bullhead or squared shape. Unlike most chronographs, the Datora featured a 45-minute register, instead of the more common 30-minute register.

The Datora line, while one of Breitling’s lesser-known models, nevertheless has a wide range of appeal for its early appearance as a complicated dress watch and its later appearance as a sporty chronograph with a reputable Valjoux movement.

Breitling "Long Playing" Ref. 815. stainless steel wristwatch with round button chronograph, "Panda" registers and tachometer.

Case: Two-body, polished, stainless steel case, steel back, antimagnetic protecting cap, lapidated lugs.

Dial: "Satiné" silver with applied silver indexes and tritium dots, auxiliary "guilloché" black dials for the seconds, the 12 hours and 30 minutes registers, outer tachometer graduation. "Bâton" tritium-coated silver hands.

Movement: Cal. 7736, rhodium-plated, 17 jewels, straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock-absorber, self-compensating flat balance-spring.

Circa: 1974

Diameter: 38mm Thickness: 15mm

More about Breitling:

One of the lesser-known models produced by Breitling, the Long Playing was an added feature to certain Top time chronographs. There is still debate today as to which group can claim the title of producing the first automatic chronograph, but it is accepted that since the Chrono-matic was the first to be available to the public for purchase, it wins the title.

In 1965, the group of Heuer, Breitling, Hamilton, and Dubois Depraz began working on the project, dubbed “Project 99”, with each company being responsible for a part of the final watch. In 1967, a patent was filed for the caliber 11, and in 1968 the first prototypes were developed. In September of 1968, Breitling manufactured the first Chrono-matic wristwatch.

The design of the caliber 11 in the Chrono-matic was interesting in that it required the winding crown to be located on the opposite side of the chronograph pushers, by 9 o’clock. Since the watch had an automatic movement and would not need to be wound by hand as much, it was decided by the four firms that moving the crown to the opposite side was best.

The caliber 11 was updated to the caliber 12, as found in the present watch. The caliber 12 beat at a faster rate of 21,600 bps, compared to 19,800 bps of the caliber 11. Some references were the typical circular case shape, while others were the bullhead or squared shape.
