In 1969 Zenith presented their El Primero model as the first automatic chronograph, with a new aesthetic that is now instantly recognizable - three contrasting colors for the three chronograph subdials. Zenith wanted this movement to be the world's most accurate chronograph, and would need it to beat at a high frequency (36,000 vibrations per hour) - and on top of that, wanted to include a date function as well. Since 1969, the El Primero caliber has evolved to include additional complications, new materials, and updates for different versions. It also was used by a number of top Swiss manufacturers, including Rolex.
At the 2011 Basel Fair, Zenith released the El Primero Striking Tenth. At first glance, it may look like other El Primero models. However, the differences are based on a new and innovative movement. Instead of the standard chronograph subdials with 12 hour register and 30 minute register, the Striking Tenth accounts for tenth of second - so the central chronograph hand moves around the dial once every 10 seconds, instead of once every minute. Thus, the subdials measure 60 seconds and 60 minutes.
With its innovative chronograph function, respected in-house caliber, and now-iconic dial design, the Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth was one of the most talked about and well-received models to be released in 2011. Being limited to 1969 examples in stainless steel and 500 examples in gold, further enhanced the appeal of the model. The present example is in like new condition and will be appreciated for years to come.
